To be honest, even though the subtitles were awful, I'm happy that I've bought this set. Really! ^_^ I've only watched Giant Robo before on some old fansub tapes (good subs and terrible sound and video)... I can't describe my feelings after watching the whole series again with flawless video and astounding audio. As for the subs, I tried to forget about them! ^_^

I just can't add to Chuckopolis's post. I just don't think anyone can word it better. Bravo, Chuckopolis, bravo! Video-- (4/5) The video is actually very good. Nice to watch. It looks very pretty. ^_^ Audio-- (2.5/5) What...? What was that...? Jesus, I can barely heara word you're saying! Subtitles-- (0/5) -_-;;; The subtitles deserve to be shot... Severely. Many times... In the head... and the kneecap... Yes... Yes... Yes.... Content-- (5/5) A fine piece of anime artwork turned into a pile of doggy-poo. Lit on fire. *sigh* Just buy the VHS copies... -_-

Here's a set that poses a conundrum -- on one hand, you have near perfect optics and sonics, snazzy packings as well as the encouraging fact that Giant Robo is a masterpiece of anime art and everything looks fine and dandy -- until you switch on the subtitles. Good lord. When characters spout out sentiments like "Attacks fowrad now, Gaint Bobo!", you know it's time to throw in the towel and just give up. Granted, they're not as incomprehensible as Big O (I mean, nothing can beat "a large-scale robot makes representation") and with some work, some sort of wacky sense can be made out of the mess of a translation. But is it worth it? Probably not. I'd recommend you simply wait for the official Mangle Entertainment release (when should that be, eh? 2060?) or pick up the VHS copies that you can probably find at discount prices at some e-tailers. This series deserves to be seen. In my opinion, nothing comes close to the sheer operaic madness that this series boasts. Respect the robo. Of course, sense I now know the script by heart, I find myself just watching this set without the subtitles and reciting the original lines in proper English. Man, I suck.
