Video:

The video looks pretty good when it's in the daylight scenes. The only problems then are minor graininess and soft lines (but this is one of the older episodes so it's understandable). BUT, like 60% of the movie takes place is at nighttime, making any details VERY tough to make out. The dark colors sort of blend into each other, and there are times when the colors look VERY odd and out of place. It does not look good.

Subtitle:

Rather terrible. All the names are wrong (Conan = Kenan, Heiji = Fubu , etc.) which makes the solution VERY confusing. There was a shocking revelation at the end of the movie, which the killer was incredibly shocked at, but you can't understand it due to bad translations. It ranges from Not so bad to terrible. It's enough to keep you captivated, but you really are missing quite a lot from these subtitles. One hilarious thing I found was when Conan and Heiji noticed something strange by the nose of the burnt corpse, and the subtitles read "Isn't it... some anime?". That was funny, and there was also one instance where they translated a simple insult like 'baka' to 'whore', or 'slut' or something like that. Since Mouri was saying it to Heiji, it was very funny.

Comment:

This one is somewhat interesting to start with, but quickly turns boring and "The-only-reason-i'm-finishing-it-is-to-see-who-did-it". This Conan special (this actually was a special, unlike other mislabeled Conan DVDs) was done kind of in the middle of the computer animation boom, which means they tried to integrate computer effects with the video, but it is painstakingly obvious, and doesn't blend in at all. So in the fire explosion scenes, or some cases of the rippling water, the computer generated stands out like a sore thumb. I'm a big Conan fan, but even I am saying you shouldn't bother with this one. It wasn't one of the really good stories, the animation was sub-par, very bad DVD release. Not reccomended.

The Audio, Video, & Subs were very good 4.5/5. This movie does not contain any real spoilers to the TV series, and is a very enjoyable mini-series (movie).
