Reviews for Hikaru No Go Part 2

Video:

The same problems that reared its ugly head in Part1 are still here. The video's colors are blurry and bleed into the ones around it, and lots of pixelation in some areas. The video doesn't seem so sharp either, but that could be an illusion from the color bleeding. HikaGo has some really great colors, and the video still shows them all very nicely. It shouldn't bother you that much.

Audio:

It seems to be fine, with no distortions I heard. It seems like a basic Stereo, since this is really just a TV rip.

Subtitle:

Definantly dropped some points from the first set. THe subtitles still look the same (that plain grayish-looking white with a thick border) but the translations aren't nearly as good. 99% of the times, the names will be wrong (Chinese ones) and lots and lots of the times the subtitles are pretty broken english. Sometimes, it just plain doesn't make sense, other times it makes sense, but still with errors. The timing isn't as well done as previously, too, which was a dissapointment. It's acceptable should you want to get the show really bad, but digisubs are a better bet.... and most of them are better quality (in video) then this set anyway!

Comment:

Packaging: Once again, my set is different then the one pictured. It has an anime picture of Hikaru (looking older) at the center, with bunches of other people (Touya, Touja Meijin, Sai) surrounding him/in the background. The back is identical to set one, with no changes except the episode numbers and DVD layers were just erased (too lazy to update them? Yeah.... that's how it is. ) THe inside features some mediocre pictures with nothing special. THe spines are exactly like the first set, being half black and half white. It looks really really ugly when they're on your shelf, which is too bad. Menus: They haven't changed much since the last set. In fact, the only changes are the Scene Select (of course) and the music to the Setup is different. Real effort they put in here. *rollseyes* I shouldn't really be complaining though... it's only menus. But still. A good thing is all the openings and endings are included this time! Unfortunantly, the ending changed to one that's not as good as the first, which was a shame. They are still all unsubbed. Hikaru no Go keeps getting really interesting, and each episode makes you want to watch the next one. It's really a unique anime, and I reccomend getting it.

Decent TV-rip. Same quality as first 2 disc set.

Audio:

Good audio.

The quality of the subs varies. For the first 8 or 9 eps the subs are crappy HK-originals: Chinese names and bad grammar. The last episodes have very good subs with correct names. So my rating is something like 2 stars for the first 2/3 and 5 stars for the last 1/3, giving 3 stars average.

Note that the other reviewers before me have reviewed the second disc of vol. 1. My review is about the 3rd and 4th disc that make vol. 2. This series is very good. Too bad about the subs in the first 2/3 of this set. Recommended only if your "Engrish" is good enough. Also the little Go lessons at the end of each episode aren't included anymore :( booo, I wan't Yugai-sensei back

Video, Audio, & Subs are very good, but it appears that it was copied from TV...but I swear the quality seems to be superior to a TV copy. I really enjoyed this series but it reminded me of Yu-gi-oh (maybe it is a common theme in Japan to be possed by an ancient spirit). The main problem with Vol 2 is where it ends off. I really wanted to see the next episode. I am very glad that I am watching this series and I want to learn how to play Go (The last anime that made me feel like this but to a much larger degree was when I started playing basketball after watching Slam Dunk). This is a great series and I hope that everyone buys it right now so that they continue with the series.

Volume 2 is a single-disc release that contains episodes 5-13. They are TV broadcast rips that look ALMOST as good as DVD. I have the overscan minimized on my TV and I can see the jerky white dot across the bottom that suggests this is from tape, but it looks way too good to be either VHS or S-VHS. You can occasionally see very minor dropouts. Perhaps it's from Hi-8 or some other digital format? The subtitles are very good with occasional misspellings. The names are usually correct and the timing seems fine. They seem to be taken from the [Elite-Fansubs] divx files, but I haven't done a direct comparison. The additional GO term definitions from the fansubs are not included. While this is unfortunate, the definitions are helpful while watching, but are not essential, so this should not put anyone off from buying this excellent disc. One bit of unnecessary editing, though: The opening and closing credits are not included with every episode. The disc opens with the opening credits and we don't see closing credits until the end of the final episode. All of the Go Go Igo live-action instructional clips are there, though. The audio is fine, exactly what you would expect from a broadcast rip. Hikaru no Go Volume 2 Manga International, Inc. DVD-24902-E (Actually listed on case sleeve as Rogin International, Inc., but the disc plays with the MI logo) Total time: 3:01:42 Average bitrate: 5.31Mbps Video 4/5; Audio 4/5; Subtitles 4/5 In closing, Volume 2 is an excellent nine episode disc that is well worth owning.
