Reviews for Rurouni Kenshin TV Series Part 3

Video seemed slightly better in this set than the previous 2 sets for some reason but still not DVD quality.

Audio:

I don't know if this is just heard on home theater type setups but there was a tremendous amount of audio crackling going on. Every time the menu loaded up I got an earful of crackle as one of the themes started playing. Also the audio crackling is very bad during the Christian saga and then seemed to let up a little during the final sagas of this set.

Subtitle:

This was the worst set as far as dropped subs. The Christian saga really took a dive and there were many dropped lines. At a fairly important storyline event they just forgot to sub an entire conversation. Again like the audio it seemed to get slightly better during the last two sagas. They however ended up spelled Feng Shui strangely in the subs (something like "Fushie Yuie") and I had no idea they were talking about Feng Shui until after I read a synopsis on some fan website.

Comment:

For me this was the worst of 3 MI sets. The subs and audio really took a crap during the Christian saga. It did get a little better during the Knight and Feng Shui sagas but since I considered the Christian saga to be the last "good" part of Kenshin it didn't really matter to me. Also they are missing episode 95 on this set. Not that it's real important but it is detached from the Feng Shui saga and is sort of a finale to the series and focuses on the characters since most all of them got totally ignored in the Feng Shui saga.

I have seen both OVAs and the previous 2 sets. This set takes a great dip in sub quality. Though there are no mistimed subs, quite a number of dialogue was not translated, the subs varied from engrish to unedited fansubbed quality(plenty of typos). Still it's watchable.

You have to select the subs from the animated menu, it won't work with the remote button for some reason.

Comment:

You have to love it because it's Kenshin. Audio/video quality was decent. The subs, although understandable, have typos beyond typos. EX: goals --> goats stuff like this so often, where they're hitting keys from the opposite side of the board. Not just wrong keys, but replacing words with similar ones. Watch it with your friends and make a game out of deciding what the subs were _meant to say. I'm pretty sure they're fansubs, but wow. The bizarre subs didn't affect my enjoyment. Although there was this one instance, "[something in reference to Kenshin]..ass, I will be the one to grab it!" We can assume ass-->assassin, and the grabbing was more like defeat or destiny or something. Also, the fourth disk has a picture of Kenshin and Kaoru holding a red-haired kid together which freaked me out, but after watching the set through I know now that it's just fan art.

Normal. Sometimes on the earlier seasons I watched dubbed 'cause we were working on craft projects while watching. I kinda miss some of the voices from that [Sano especially.]

Subtitle:

Firstly, off of the subtitle button on the remote you can't access them-- you have to select them from the animated disc menu. Although they were fansubs [or so the legend says] they were pretty messed up. Timing is hard to work out, so I don't care about that, but it was full of typos. You could usually tell what they were _meant to say, but these were the typos from hell. Not even just scrambled or missing letters, but rather keys from the opposite side of the keyboard, goals-->goats, etc. It's beyond me how these could be accidental. Also, here's an example... I'm not kidding... "[something in reference to Kenshin] ass, I will be the one to grab it!" Now, I'm sure that there were a few words missing, and ass-->assassin, and the grabbing is more like defeating or destiny or something, but man... that's precious.

Comment:

Despite the typos of doom, this was a pretty reasonable set, and I'm glad I got it [I rented the first two seasons as r1 releases from a comic shop.] The fourth disk has on it a picture of Kenshin-dono and Kaoru-san holding a red-haired child together, so we were pretty worried about how the show would end, but it was only fan art //relief// and the show ends in the usual abrupt fashion, after a saga with no suggestion that it's really the end.
Also, even though the box and a few of the discs have Shishio-sama on it, that was _second season, and everything in this set takes place after that.
A lot of our old friends come back, including Oniwabanshu no Misao, who amazed me at how un-annoying and useful she was!

Well the audio & video are top notch. The subs are very good but have spelling mistakes, no spacing between words, & a few mis-timings. The subs are still really good the problems only occur infrequently...and the mis-timing is fixed in a matter of seconds. The artwork on the gatefold is really cool. Overall, I am very happy with the set and recommend it to any Kenshin fan who wants the whole set for a cheap price.

Video: Good Audio Good Subs: Good Extras: None Package: Excellent Content: Very Good If you seen one Kenshin set you've seen them all it seems: Same damn menu for each DVD Intro and Outro appear only once per DVD One chapter break per and episode (begining and Middle) Unique to this set: Menu had different music, yeah! And this set had scratches all over the bottom, but it worked so oh well..... I had to search too, but I found Bonnie Pink's "It's gonna rain" outro after one of the episodes... so I'm happpy. edited by krunkster on 22 Apr 2002 12:00 pm
