Video is OK. It's a little bit pale and there's some pixelation in fast action scenes. Nothing big to worry about. But what really annoyed me is the black shadow like bar that appears on top of the screen from time to time (the same thing as in MI's old Love Hina set). You can see it in some of the screen shots posted here. So obviously it's a digital to analog and back to digital rip. Maybe this bars are the remains of Macrovision.

Audio:

Nothing to complain about on my simple stereo TV.

Subtitle:

Excellent subs. Correct punctuation, very very few typos and only very few missing lines. There are some slight mistimings, but they recover after one or two lines. Names are right, although there were some inconistencies in the last 9 eps, like Noin becoming Neun and Hirde becoming Hildy. Also the last episodes (the ones with the different opening) didn't have the songs and the previews subbed.

Comment:

OK, it's kind of pointless reviewing this title with all the "perfect" sets out. But hey, I watched it so I review it ;) The set's quality is very good (I was a bit harsh on my video rating, because of the black bars). So there's nothing wrong with buying this version if you still see it anywhere. I'm a little split about the anime itself. It gets very boring sometimes. Actually I dozed off on some episodes. And I don't mean the political stuff, that was ok. But all this pointless space mecha fights. Boooring! If you want to watch political mechas, I'd recommend Gasaraki. But that's my personal taste. Equipment used: Sony DVD-NS300 PAL codefree player; cheap Grundig 27" PAL stereo TV

overall great gundam series, amoung the best in my opinion but I'd advise you to take the gundam wing by Mac with english and japanese languages, I have this set because a friend gave it to me. but I'll be sure to buy the perfect collection. Great plot and action scenes along with twists all the way. Intriguing. Buy this series just not this set lol

Video: Very good, though you can see evidence of compression (10 episodes on one disc) in the high-motion sequences. The images aren't as crisp as they are in the R1 release, but it's decent.

Audio:

Audio: No problems here.

Subtitle:

Subtitles: For a HKDVD, the subtitling is rather good, with the exception of minor errors (as described by other users). I would have preferred subtitling of every intro/ending sequence, but that's the only area where they skimped. The subtitling is grammatically correct for the most part, though the transliterations of some character names differ slightly from the R1's "official" tranliterations.

Comment:

I'm not such a big fan of the ending song, which is played repeatedly in the DVD menus. But aside from that minor annoyance, this is a rather good set and recommended.

The video and audio are both pretty good for a 1995 release. I was impressed by how they put the dvd together with the meus and quality. Video-4.5/5 Audio-4/5 A definate buy if you are a gundam fanatic. If you dont like gundam shows from other series chances are that you probably wont like this one. It could get confusing at times. The subs are ripped from fan subs so no problem there. All intro and ending songs are there for every episode so its all good. Subtitle-5/5 It is a recommended dvd if you like gundam. edited by jimqiu2000 on 31 Jul 2002 10:59 pm

Very good video quality. The coloring seems to be just right and there are very few glitches (a couple times the vertical hold goes out of whack for like a split second). My main issue would be that when there are a lot of high motion things going on (like Trowa's Gundam up close, or a lot of little yellow lasers), there is pixilation. It's not too bad but it's definitely noticeable.

Audio:

No issues at all. For lack of a better word, perfect.

Subtitle:

It appears that fansubs were used. Overall, they are very good with few mistakes. Most mistakes that were made were minuscule mistimes, but there were occasions of other slip-ups. In episode 1, about 1 minute goes unsubbed and you miss 5 or 10 lines of dialogue. Around episode 8, the intro part goes unsubbed, but it's the same as like the previous 6, so you know what's going on. In episode 43, both the intro and the next episode preview are unsubbed. In episodes 46-48, the next episode previews also aren't subbed. Also in episode 48, about 5 lines in a dialogue between Trowa and Dorothy go unsubbed. The last issue was starting around episode 45 or so, Noin magically becomes Neun, even though they are both grammatically very different. Go figure, eh? Another...more last issue is with the character Hirde. It gets translated as Hirde in the fansubs I downloaded (just to check) and in the HK DVD's, but I believe that the R in Hirde should have been substituted for with an L. I highly doubt that that girl's name is Hirde. Hilde seems much more plausible (speaking of Hirde/Hilde, her name gets put down as Hildy twice).

Comment:

This is a very safe set to buy and I highly recommend it. As an overall score for the series itself, I would give it a 5/5.

As my title says, this release of Gundam Wing is a very good release. The video quality is very nice, as well as the amount of content that is on this set. I for one am glad to get this set, instead of having to pay $200+ for all the R1 DVDs. This Gundam series is by far one of the best that are out there, and it is very deep and fun to watch, plenty of action intrigue, and classis Earth vs Colonies action. Anyways on to the review. Video - 4/5 The video is very impressive. They fit 4 hours of video, or the whole episode, intro and ending included. Since it's 5 Discs they put 10 episodes per disc. They use the full capacity of each of the discs, so that's about 7.8 gigs of video and Audio. The video most of the time is very crisp and clear (except for a black bar on the top that keeps moving up and down, but I'm not sure if that's an animation error, transfer error, or was in the original film that was made, either way it's not too noticable as to distract you from the show). There are macroblocks on the most motion intensive scenes, and a little bit of compression artifacts here and there, but in most cases not bad at all. There is no rainbowing at all on this video, so my guess is that this is a rip of the DVDs, but I'm not entirely sure as to where the source material is from. The only other thing that i can say about the DVDs that I had a little problem with (besides macroblocks) was that the video was a little dark. Besides the little quibles I had, the cost of the video highly overweighs my problems with the video, and anyways, i can just adjust the controls on PowerDVD, or the TV. Audio - 4/5 The Audio is pretty good. It's all there, I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary, no hisses, pops or hums. But the problem I had with the audio was that it was just a little dull. I couldn't put my finger on it, and maybe I'm just being a little too audiophilic, but it didn't strike me as being perfect. But this shouldn't deter you from purchasing this DVD. The audio is there, and noithing there that would make you not want to buy it. Sub - 4/5 The subs on this set are almost nearly perfect. There are a few missing subs though (usually only a line or two, and most of the time, you can infer what they were saying, so it's not the biggest deal). The missing subs are few and far between (unlike in the Anime Studio Version). The other part of the subs that was a little disapointed, but not together all that bad was that they advertised their E-mail address whenever there are long periods of non-speech. So you may have some action, with subs at the bottom, not all that pretty, but you can turn it off if you wish. Overall this set is very good, and worth owning. This beats the snot out of the Anime Studio version which was just a direct rip, only more compressed with more artifacts, shittier subs, and worse audio. The AS version is 4 discs as well, so that meant there was going to be obvious amounts of loss. On top of that, There was Audio sync problems, chinese subs instead of English subs in a few places. As far as I can tell this set has it all, even un credited intros at the end of the last DVD (except for the intro for episodes 48 and 49 which are just slightly different), and looks good to boot. IF you are a Gundam Wing fan, I don't see why you shouldn't get this set, as it is really really good, and sure as hell is going to cost you a whole lot less than the Region 1 or 2 DVDs would.
