Reviews for Lupin III Special : The Great Battle to Return The Treasure

Overall:

Video:

The video quality is pretty good on this disc with good colours and no pixelation to be seen. The only problem is in some of the dark scenes it gets hard to make out what's happening. I don't know if this problem existed in the original release or not but it is a little irritating in one or two scenes.

Audio:

Played through my Kenwood amp and Mission speakers, this release has great stereo seperation and excellent sound levels throughout the movie.

Subtitle:

These are a bit on the shaky side. Most of the grammar requires a bit of thought to figure out what's going on. There is one dropped line that is easy enough to guess at what was said. The final problem is that the subtitle for two different people will show on the screen in one big sentance. It takes some guessing to figure out who said what. Fortunately, this movie is more about the action than anything else so the poor subtitles don't really take too much away from enjoying the whole story.

Comment:

This is a pretty average Lupin release. There are a lot of nice touches throughout that pay tribute to the TV series like a cut scene of Lupin riding a motorcycle similar to the old closing credits. This is one of the more serious Lupin movies where Jigen and Lupin actually shoot to kill. None of the deaths are graphic. Zenigata is finally treated as a fairly competant police officer and actually manages to capture Lupin in this. The highlight for me was watching Fujiko kick butt in the final scenes of the movie.
