The video quality was alright, but it could have been better. The first disk it starts out fine but as it progress you start to see a few lines across the screen but nothing really to conplain about. It wasn't until the second disk that it became really bad. Those few little lines turned into huge scratches across yours screen. Thankfully it returns back to normal and remains like that for the rest of the series.

Audio:

I had no problem with the audio.

The subs were alright. I have seen worst out there and these were fairly good. A little Engrish but like I said it wasn't all the bad. They got (most of the) names right for the first two disks. Like they subbed Alex as Alex, Claus as Claus and etc. They just seemed to never get Vanship right; they would call it something strange for the first few eps but switched to Pioneer. So they called the Vanships Pioneers, now okay you can live with that. However when it came to the third disk, they got Vanship partly right and called it Vanward...but then things like Alex, Claus, and Tatiana they got all wrong! Delphine, Lucciola and Silverna were however a few names that were a littler entertaining to see. It was like they couldn't decide how to spell them, and it was always changing. I think the funnist one thow was when they called the Silverna 'Yinyach' or something of the sorts. The best part about this is these were clearly writin in English as episode titles or in the breaks between episodes.

Comment:

There seems to be some problems with the first disk here though. It seems to freeze up here and there or give me big pixely blobs. However it only happens sometimes and generally played fine on my DVD players. It just wouldn't play on my friend's Xbox or computer. As for the show I really really enjoyed it. Love it and going to scrap up the money to buy the R1 or R2 DVDs. The story just pulled me in and I couldn't stop watching. The animation is nice, the CG is nice, and the character designs are wonderful. Murata Range is such an impressive artist really love his character designs in Blue Sub 6. To summarize it Last Exile is a wonderful series, a good watch, and wonderful story and character devolupement.

This release is a TV rip, and unfortunately a really bad one too. There is a lot of ghosting going on screen and out of all 26 episodes, maybe 2 or 3 have really flawless video. It would seem that whatever video device they used to record the series needs to be tossed out as garbage. I kept getting reminded of the old VHS days. Definitely not the video quality you would expect from a DVD release.

Audio:

Seems at least that they got the audio right. The audio is dolby digital 2.0. As this is a TV rip, there is no English track.

Subtitle:

Subtitles are for a lack of a better word, bad. There is a lot of Engrish going on on some episodes. Others seem a bit better. If you speak Chinese, you might be able to understand the english subtitles better, as they pulled the 'translate from Japanese to Chinese, then translate Chinese to English' stunt. Otherwise, you will definitely see sentences that do not make much sense.

Comment:

Last Exile is a wonderful series with a lot of character development and interaction. The mecha is very refreshing as it mixes medieval and futuristic looks. This series would probably be one of the best series released in 2003, so it is just a shame that this release really does not do it justice. I am sure MI would probably do a "remastered" version of the Last Exile series once they get a hold of all the R2 releases. So, my advice to you, steer clear of this release and wait until there is a better version of it.
