Reviews for Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Perfect Collection

Video:

For me, it was perfect. No pixelation or anything.

Audio:

Nothing wrong with the Japanese track.

Subtitle:

The subtitles were perfect.

Comment:

I could never really get in to this series. The set was great and the series was ok, but I could never watch more than an episode at a time. From what I have seen, Rahxephon is better and fixes all of the flaws that Evangelion has.

Great Video Quality!!! If You Can Look Past The Eva Jiggle That Was ADV's Fault Theres Really No Quality Difference Between This and The R1's!! Vary Minor Pixilation In High Action Scene's But Overall Solid Work By FX!!

Audio:

Not 5.1 DD But For Normal Audio Its Decent No Complaints!!

Subtitle:

Great Subb's Translation Wise!!!! But In The First Couple Episodes The Hardcoded Subs Are In The Backround Which Clogs Up The Character Dialog And Makes It Semi-Difficult To Read. But Nothing To Worry About As the Hardcoded Subs Dont Last Long On The Screen.

Comment:

Great Box Art Excellent Dvd Art!!!! Another Overall Great Product By Fx!!! If Your A Fan Of Anime In Anyway You MUST SEE THIS SERIES!!!! You'll Be Impressed!!! , If Your Not Collecting The New Platnum Edition (Which By The Way Has Some Bad Translations) This Is the Route To Go As ADV's Perfect Collection is $100+ and If Your Even Remotly Pleased With The Series You'll Have to Buy The R1's Of The Directors Cuts Dvd's (2 In Total) Which Are a important Part Of NGE , And Also the End Of Evangelion Movie So Adv Will Milk Some Money Out Of You But Overall What You Pay In Total For The Whole Series And The Ending It Will Be A Steal Compared To The Platinum Edition!!!! (140usd Saved) Enjoy

There were a few pixination things, but it wasn't anything horrible, so I give this a 5. I mean, there's a lot of stuff happening in each episode, so it's understandable

Audio:

I loved the audio. The music and such absolutely blew my mind. However, the dubbing was a little on the down side. At least, for the first few episodes. Once all the weirdness kicks in, the dubbing becomes very 'on the mark' THE OPENING SONG KICK SERIOUS BUTT!

Subtitle:

Some of the subs were a little off, but not badly. As the revewier below me stated, that bothered to translate all the background noises, which put a TON of words of the screen at one time. No problems other then that, however.

Comment:

If oyu want to fry your brain with philisophical themes, watch this show. At the beginning, it seems like your run-of-the-mill mecha. However, about episode 10 or 11, things really seem to take a 180. I really can't explain it, it jsut gets weird. I mean, I've watched a TON of anime, but this one wins the contest for 'strangest anime'. Also, it gets kinda religious, but not in a bad way. There's quite a bit of fan service: with girls a swimsuits and sounds of sex. (moaning and such). Also, there's one episode where all three main girls are topless. There's no detail or anything, but its kinda strange. I can understand why they put it in there, but I think it was kinda unnecessary.

Great subs!!!! but why a 4??? the stupidity of subbing unneeded backround crap like if a Tv is on and ull here lines from a tv show or movie so u got 2 different people talkin at the same time but most the time the main character is on the top of the tv speakin crap also the hardcoded subbs are a lil pain but most of them are only in the first few eps!!! after sayin that id take these subbs over allllott of other hk sets!!!!

Overall quality was crisp and smooth. There was very minimal pixelation on red. Although the quality is almost perfect it had a some what annoying feature a few times where the scene would change the screen would shake into place a little. Though I just found out this is known as the ?Eva Jiggle?, meaning this is not the fault of FX, rather ADV?s original Eva DVD?s... luckily Platinum is coming! No more Eva Jiggle for you R1 fans. Other than that animation is good, but is dated.

Audio:

Perfect sound. I didn?t find anything wrong with it.

Subtitle:

R1 quality. Made sense not much to complain about.

Story: Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place on an Earth that is being attacked by lifeforms known as ?angels?. NERV is a team that specializes in stopping the angels to literally save the world by preventing the third impact. They fight the angels using Evangelions, which were developed from the angels technology. The Evangelions are piloted by 14 year old kids Shinji, Asuka, and Rei. The story goes deeper than mech battles by delving into the pasts of the many characters at NERV. Each one plays a part into the future of the Evas and the destruction of the angels. Content: Minimal fanservice in every episode (pajamas?!, bathing suit, and featureless frontside). Violence... not to violent in the beginning episodes, but towards the second half of the series it becomes very violent. Also lots of darker/deeper themes are present, such as death and tormented psyches. Menu?s: Menu?s are really easy to navigate. Lists the episodes on the opening screen. Includes menus for playing all, language, scene selection and extras. Extras include character bio?s. Chapter Break Report: Break points were way off on disc two... ranging from almost 30 seconds before the actual point where it should have been. Very annoying. Luckily this was not present on either disc one or three. Packaging: Gatefold that has pictures of the pilots (Shinji, Asuka, Rei) along with Eva 01. Opening this portion opens up to the discs which reveals more pictures of the pilots, primarily Rei... on all three discs. Opinion: Great action and an intriguing story kept me hooked. I never saw it before getting this set and now I know what truly awesome anime I missed. The last two episodes are a bit odd and they have little to nothing to do with the series besides thoughts of characters.. these episodes didn?t bother me, I looked at them as ?freebies?. Deep and fun anime to watch. Neon Genesis Evangelion, 26 episodes on three discs.

I had no problems in the long run, but there were a couple of problems that I did find. 1) On all of the discs, whenever there was a high action scene, it would get pixelated. With this pixelation, which was very light, it made the picture be a little blury. But, even with these, you could see what was going on. 2) There was a slight problem with the actual alignment, but mainly noticably on the first disc. When ever it would change to a different angle, the picture would be shaky right after it changed. It didn't stay, and nor was it an annoyance, but it was something noticed. 3) This anime looks extremely old. I'm not sure on the exact date it was made (I'm thinking mid 90s), but it looks fairly old. Other than those problems, it was pretty good. The third disc is the best, quality wise.

Audio:

I listened to the Japanese audio track and it sounded great. But, the track did have a lower volume level than the English audio did, but a quick adjustment (ie. turn up the volume) and it was fine. By the way, the English track is very bad! Just thought I would give you guys a heads up on that one.

Subtitle:

Great subtitles, but, like always, I have complaints: 1) The subtitles were very big. Although I did like the size in the long run, it was very disturbing when the character had the television on. 2) Further describing the television/radio/intercom comment: Whenever there was some other voice speaking, they felt as though they had to translate. This means that whenever this was going on, subtitles took up half of the page. It was also very hard to tell which subtitle went to which person.

Comment:

Very nice set! The package is great as well. I will get scans of it pretty soon. Hang tight! Also, I had difficulties getting this set to work on Apex players, so that's a heads up to all Apex DVD players. But anyway, have fun with this series. It's very engaging, confusing, and absolutely fantastic!

The quality was average considering that the anime is also old (I think NGE is dated around 1997). It wasn't good, but it wasnt bad either. There was a few pixelations on random parts in some episodes. You can see the blurs when the screen goes black (but I notice that on many other anime HKDVDs).

Audio:

The only thing I noticed about the anime is that when they announce something on the PA it can be heard clearly in English audio. But when you change it to Japanese audio, you can barely hear the people in the background. Example would be when Misato and Asuka are talk about Shinji behind a door or something, you can see the subtitles, but you can barely hear the audio.

Subtitle:

The subtitles were great. Found no spelling errors and they were all on time. There was one thing that I noticed (kind of tied in between audio and subtitles), is when there is background chatter (important and non-important speech), they run the subtitles on the bottom so it's hard to keep up with whats going on. From episodes 1 - 4 they used a small font size. Then from episode 5 to the end they used an even larger font size. I thought it would be better if they kept the font consistant through the entire set. Little things like these I'm picky about.

Comment:

Only problems I found were on Disc 2. The chapter breaks werent on time. Example I skip the to the next chapter and it should start at the beginning of the intro song, but instead it starts off in the middle of the intro. I also noticed that on some parts the screen just freezes for a few seconds. I watched the anime on my Apex and that could be easily fixed by pressing the play button. And the menus were a bit messed up on Disc 2 as well. It was a minor problem, but I couldnt move the cursor to the right when selecting an episode so I have to scroll all the way down until the cursor moves to the next column.

Well the video isnt crystal clear but neither were the R1's so going by the R1's the video is near perfect. The video is a little washed out and unsharp (as were the R1s) but the video picks up slightly around the fourth episode on the second disc where we get clearer colours and sharper lines... Over all I liked the quality and the show IS from 1995 so its not going to be amazing anyway...

Audio:

Again the show isnt that new but the audio has nothing really to complain about. The only thing I noticed is when there is speaking or BGM in the background (such as an anouncement) its a little quiet but thats all that can be said about it... I havent checked the English audio yet but will probably watch the whole series in English then edit the review...

Subtitle:

No problems at all really. Perfect subs, all there and on time! The only issue is if there is harcoded subs on screen (like when they translate a sign or place it was hardcoded in the R1s) the subs are sometimes placed over them making it hard to read... Sometimes when there are people speaking and something like a soap opera on TV is on, the sub both at the same time and one runs above the other so you have to quickly find which one to read first. Lastly the sub font had yellow letters that were quite widely spread from each other (the kerning is it?) so it looked a bit like this ' H e y M i s a t o !' (but not as wide as that). You might find it easyer to read but it kinda made it harder for my eyes to adjust to the subs... Either way I still thought they were perfect subs and someone mentioned there being some delay issues but there weren't.

Comment:

One more issue is the chapters on disc 2... They start off about 2 seconds behind (which is better than forward because all you have to do is wait a few seconds and your there) but at episode 5 the chapter skip that skips the opening song (There are a few chapters per ep including the start, after op has finished, break and then next ep preview although the last 3 eps on disc one didnt have this) just went randomly like 5 mins into the show but they got back to normal again on the next episode (except now the gap was like 10 seconds behind). All the chapters returned to normal again on the 3rd disc... I also noticed about 5 skips on one episode on the last disc but they were minor and just looked like layer changes and are probably just an error on my disc... The gatefold looked great and when you first open it you get a superb image of the crew with shinji and his eva taking center stage... This then folds out again to reveal some nice images of Rei and her eva, then the image used on the front and then Rei again reclining on a wall... All the images are from Der Mond. As for the series its now my all time greatest anime series ever (it was Maison Ikkkoku but this obviously beats it!) and I watched it all in one weekend which is rare for me. I havent seen Death & Rebirth yet or the End of Eva but ive heard people complain about the ending being rubbush and that it doesnt explain anything but they must just be narrow minded idiots who have no creative imagination... Its much more thought provoking than any other giant robot show!

quality of the video is great. i dont have any complains about it, but i do have one recomendation. if you are using a playstation 2 for dvd player it may freeze for one or two seconds in two or three episodes, but if you are using a regular dvd player disregard this note.

Audio:

the audio was great both english and japanese languages.

Subtitle:

the subtitles are good but they tend sometimes to be a little slow to appear, so if you are listening to japanese language you may be reading somethig that was said a couple of lines before. this problem doesnt occur that much so dont panic about it.

Comment:

the tv series were great. all of the dvds run without any major problems. the problems that i stated are just minor problems. the dvd is offer as an fx dvd, but it doesnt have the fx stamp anywhere in the case. it says animation world international limited.
