Reviews for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou

Overall:

Video:

On my DVD drive on my computer, I did not see any defects of pixilation on this R2 rip. But, as per usual, it may vary if you watch this on a standalone player. Presented in standard-screen (4:3) format.

Audio:

This DVD has both 5.1 and 2.1 options. However, if you have 2 speakers, you must select this option yourself -- otherwise, it'll default to 5.1, which sounds poopy on a 2.1 setup. (At first, I originally thought the disk was defective.) With the 2.1 soundtrack, it sounds perfect on 2.1 equipment, like mine -- no defects. Just make sure you set the right settings.

Subtitle:

Subtitles are the usual stilted grammar with no punctuation. Otherwise, subs are understandable with dead-on timing. Most on-screen Japanese are subbed, as well as its only theme song. On the entire disk, "alright" is spelled "oright". Also, the subtitlers had the urge to sub English signs, such as "Cafe Alpha" (with this sub, blink and you'll miss it), and most importantly, the show's sub-title, "Quiet Country Cafe" (as "Quite Country Cafe"). While they subtitled that, they never bother translating or romanji-ing the show's main title, "Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou".

Comment:

Menus: Fully-animated, with part of the theme playing in the background. Main menu has four options -- Play All, Chapters (8 in all), Extras and Subtitles. All have the same theme playing and all are in Japanese only, except for the subtitles menu, which is silent and in English (English and Chinese subs are offered). Case: Standard DVD Amaray; front has girl with mandolin; back has movie scenes and info in Japanese. Other: I think the opening for the first episode was cut off, though I'm not certain, as I don't have the R2, nor is this available in R1. Story: See the main page for this DVD for a description, which I have written. While this is a rather quaint 2-episode OAV series, you'll probably get lost if you haven't read the manga (luckily, fansubs are available as I write this), especially since hardly any names have been mentioned, according to the subs. Another time-killer for a rainy day, though if you haven't read the manga first, it'll leave you with more questions than you had when you started watching it. For example -- how can Alpha be a robot when she behaves perfectly like a human, all the way down to eating and drinking like one? (I originally mentioned that "robot" instead of "pilot" was a subtitle mistake, but I retracted that, since reading the manga fansubs covering this OAV.)
