Reviews for Ai Yori Aoshi Complete Collection

Perfect DVD rip on the first 2 discs. But on the third disc we get bad TV rip. Excactly like the TV rips of One Piece (AV) or RahXephon (AV). Vertical shadows and bad phantom pictures. Must be the same guy who makes this rips. I wonder if he receives his program with a wet towel for an antenna. I'm really fed up with those bad TV rips at the end of series that started as nice DVD-rips, so from this review on I will give one star penalty for series that switch from DVD to TV rip. So here's the calculation: (5+5+2)/3-1=3

Audio:

Noticed nothing wrong on my simple stereo TV.

Subtitle:

There are different subs for discs 1+2 and for disc 3. But both are very good. Either based on fansubs or very good HK originals. Only some minor grammar faults. Quite a lot of typing errors on the first 2 discs. Some occasional missing lines. Names are right, except for the ferret "Uzume" that is called "Mai" on the last disc.

Comment:

Looks like the first 2 discs are MI rip and the last is AV rip. Too bad about the video on disc 3. The series itself is nice and easy to watch. But its main concept, blending the slow (and totally unfunny) romance between Aoi and Kaoru with ecchi harem-style comedy, fails (of course). Not a must buy, but not a bad buy either.

For the first 2 disc, and thus, first 18 episodes, the source was the R2 DVD's and it shows. No signs of macroblocking or anything of the sort. Really, quite the pretty picture. These episodes get a 5/5 for video. Then disc 3 hits, and these 6 episodes are TV ripped and TV ripped bad. Perfectly watchable, just damn ugly. Looks like whoever DVD-RAMed these episodes had shitty reception and...well, it's hard to describe. Like a ghost of the image is shifted to the side. These episodes get a 2/5. Really now, if you use R2's for the first 18 episodes, wait it out and use the R2's for the last 6. Don't get cheap.

Audio:

Episodes 1-18 get a 4.5. Nothing wrong with them. Episodes 19-24 get a 4 for being TV Ripped.

Subtitle:

Really good. Definitely fansubs. No mistimes, some misspelling, and by being a somewhat older MAC title, there are about 2 lines missed per episode. However, at least MAC was smart enough to redo the subs for episode 22, which I hear were FUBAR on the MI set.

Comment:

At one point in time, I had considered getting the R1's of this show, but changed my mind and picked up the HK's instead. I'm glad I made this decision. Not too bad of a show, and not great either. 3.5/5
