Reviews for Lupin III 2nd TV Part 1

Overall:

Video:

Once again for the age of this series the picture quality is superb. Nice, crisp edges and vibrant colours without any pixelation or other problems.

Audio:

The sound levels and quality are both ok but there are one or two short times (like five to ten minutes) where the sound falls out of synch in an episode only to resynch at a commercial break. It's not a huge problem as the synch is only off by less than a quarter second so it just feels a bit odd. This may have even been a problem with the original series which I don't have any way to compare. It happens once in episode 8 and again on the second disc during one episode (sorry, I don't remember the number).

Subtitle:

These subs vary in quality. The first few episodes are worthy of R1 quality. Then they start to get a bit Engrishy with some odd translations. The names are off for the most part as well. Lupin and Zenigata are always called by their names but everyone else tends to be called by either the Chinese equivalent or the last name (which is weird). As the series progresses, there are a few timing issues and a dropped line or two.

Comment:

This is the first set of the series run that started in 1977 and ran through most of 1980. Where the first run was directed entirely by Miyazaki, this run of the show featured a wide range of directors so there is a different approach to the characters from episode to episode. Miyazaki did come back to direct episodes 145 and 155 and the difference is easy to spot even if you don't know to watch for them (although this set only contains up to episode 26 of the second run).
