This review is presented so ppl know this set exists and not being caught unaware :) One of the classic works of Leiji Matsumoto, Space BattleShip Yamato is a work that any lover of anime should have in their collection, that show the triumph of man against incredible odds to save their beloved planet Earth against the evil Gamillas who prepare it with their radiation bombardment to turn it into their new home, killing all mankind in the process. they were shipped in a cheap vhs like box with a cover insert that fits one standard dvd case and the discs where shipped on sleeves basically if you go for one of these be prepared to pass then to another storage medium. basically is an ok package for a great series...get it :) Disc 1 and 2 have 7 eps, 3 and 4 6, disc 2 contains a music video and 4 contain 2 series review secuences(not subbed), menu has the standard play all, chapter select and language select Manga's Emails and watermarks appear on the 1st dvd for a couple of moments, it was basically an empty space scene, so nothing visual was affected

This series was made in the 1975 and it shows. The animation shows its technical limitations, but it is really fascinating. Its a piece of history! For years I wanted to see this series and at last I have it. They used the gorgeous remastered R2 DVDs. If you have a trained eye you can spot some little imperfections caused by the re-compression, but even with 9-10 eps per disk everything looks really good. They put their logo and their email info at the beginning of the disks... Not at all annoying, fortunately, they come out for a short while, and are at the beginning only.
Audio:
Well... don't expect 5.1 or at least a stereo sound from this old series... Its mono, but sounds perfect, no problems at all.
Subtitle:
They are original HK subs, probably translated from the Chinese script. The translation was very good all the time, but as usual their English is a bit poor. Some odd choice of words, but always understandable. Some names were not transliterated correctly: Sonoda is always written Shinda, Analyzer is called Anenasia on the first disk, Hisu is spelled Shisu and they insisted to call the Big Magellan Nebula with spyral galaxy or something similar for the most part of the series (probably the translator changed near the end). The opening is subbed, but they messed a bit with its translation... If you have a little knowledge of Japanese it will help to discern some imperfections (like on the names), but don't worry they are very good.
Comment:
The gatefold is beautiful and the disks too. The video is great and the subs too. This is the best HK set I have. I wanted so much to see this very famous series, and this HK set is the best edition out there! I only wish they put it all on 4 disks so everything could be maxed out, but oh well... The alternative is the edited Starblazer or the super expensive NOT subbed Japanese box.

For a series this old (70's) , the video looks simply stunning. MI logos appeared twice unfortunately in the first DVD (if i remember correctly)
Audio:
no problems
Subtitle:
They are not perfect of course, sometimes there are some odd choices for words, some grammar errors , the grammar is not correct 100%, but everything seems to be subtitled, and you will have no problems following the story.

For a show this old, this series looks great. I've seen the R1's and they look like crap. This looks way much better. No problems here.
Audio:
Didn't notice any problems. I don't have a big audio setup but everything seemed ok.
Subtitle:
This were exellent! You have the usual mispellings here and there but nothing really major.

This is a really great series and I'm glad I got to see it in it's uncut form. Totally worth the price I paid for it. I just got part 2 and when I'm finished with it I will post a review.
