Reviews for Get Backers Volume 1

For a TV rip, it looks really good. Even nighttime scenes. Sometimes the color will blur a little beyond the edges, but some times it will be true DVD quality. There is pixelation on some fast motion scenes, but you don't notice it as much, and even then it's very little.

No probs.

For the first episode, they were one line ahead, which was annoying as hell. Maybe for half the episode it was. Bits of the second episode suffer this too, but not as much. After episode 2, everything is just fine. The subtitles are definantly fansubs, since all the names are right, except for a few typos here and there. The gang Ginji was in (either VOLTS or BOLTS) sometimes gets changed to other names that sound like it, but I forgive. It's obvious it's fansubs because right after the theme song, Ban says a line, and it's subtitled as "By fans for fans, please cease distribution.... " etc., which they (MI) thought was Ban's actual dialogue. The timing was pretty much great, and I didn't have any problems with it. There were one or two dropped lines though for the entire DVD, but not a major part. The subtitle font is MI's now-typical gray-ish looking white with a very thick black border. I hate it, but I deal with it. No signs or text was translated, by the way, except for the episode titles.

Packaging: I love the package. It has a great dark-ish green background with lime green lines (with writing and pictures) over it, followed by two very good pictures of the two main characters, Amano Ginji and Midou Ban. They used a very good GetBackers logo (there are a few, and the one AV used I don't like). The back is equally impressive, with some well set up and designed pictures. The packaging for this DVD ROCKS!! You can't see it in a thumbnail, but upclose it's nice. Menus: Ugly and uninspired, with a manga picture of Ginji grinning at you, with the selections on the right. The cursor is a skull and crossbones. Nothing special with the rest of them. Everything Else: It was really good. It really was. I didn't know what it would be like, but I was pleased with it. The first two episodes were strickingly similar, but I really liked the following archs, which went into each of the two characters' past. The characters were cool and easy to enjoy (mainly Ginji, Ban can be annoying). The theme song and ending is on every single episode, but unsubbtitled, as expected. I didn't really like either of them, but the theme song can really grow in you. Overall, an original show which is really exciting, and a great release so you won't miss any of it. Definantly one you should give a shot. MI put 8 episodes on this DVD ( a very fitting number ), which is a good change of pace from their annoying habit of recent releases having a pitiful 4 per DVD. Nice action, pretty good music (one of them sounds nearly exactly like this piece from Read or Die), and enjoyable show.

I first bought this volume not knowing what I was getting into or if it was even good. I was not disappointed at all! At first you have no clue what so ever of what's happenning but then the story gets interesting. Some new characters are added, very cool ones might I say, and the story develops from there, when you get caught up in Ban's past along with Ginji's. This will keep you wanting to know more. Basically the Get Backers, get back things that were stolen or lost by their clients. With the help of their unique abilities, they fight off enemies with the same level or near it. Of course there is some comedy through it but it makes it even more better that way.
