Reviews for FLCL - Furi Kuri

Overall:

Video:

Excellent, very crisp and clean like a DVD should be.

Audio:

Nice Dolby Digital stereo mix. Seemed to get some good action to the rear speakers in Pro-logic when appropriate. This series focuses alot on music and the sound quality on this disc made sure to do the series justice.

Subtitle:

Excellent subbing, couldn't ask for better. Maybe a couple mistimings but they were very few and far between.

Comment:

FLCL is one of those shows which focuses alot on sound and imagery to convey it's message. It's sort of a coming-of-age story as seen through the dilusional mind of a teenage boy. The show is full of symbolism and has some crazy not-so-typical animation which goes along with it's equally crazy and extreme characters so you either get it or you don't. If you do, then the show is alot of fun and you'll want to watch it over and over again to find new tidbits you missed the last time. The completely J-punk/alternative soundtrack just fills the speakers throughout the series to really set the mood and help convey the feelings a typical teenage boy has at this time in his life. I would totally recommend this series to anyone with an open mind. I was a little cautious of getting this at first but am very glad that I did. After I went through the series once and finally got the jist of what just happened (nothing is really explained until the last two episodes), I found myself wanting to go through it again to understand more and catch things I didn't the first time. One of the most original series in a long time and the more I think back on it, the more I like it.

The video is very crisp, and looks great on everything I've watched it on.

Audio:

No problems that I or my friends have experienced

Subtitle:

Everyone's grading these down, but the QUALITY of the subs is awesome. So 5/5 for them, as they appear to be fansubs. The timing is noticably off in a few eps, so it's score goes down .5, however it's still easy to follow, so long as you have a decent grasp of the english language and have experienced slightly mis-timed shows before.

Comment:

One of my Top 3 HKs... It's just plain a damn fine buy. I like the show enough to buy the R1 as well, but I highly suggest this release, and the MI, and the new rip put out by MAC. If you're interested in the series or like your anime with a sprig of nonsense and a pinch of insanity for flavor, well then, 10 bucks will get you much, my friend. And for the previous reviewer- This anime is about just what it seems to be about. It's a tripped out story of a kid who's growing up and doesn't know squat about himself, love, or anything really. It's just a coming of age story that is done in a manner that differs from the usual formula a little.

Taken from the R2's. Looks great. Only minor pixilation, twice the screen "blips" (it's hard to describe), and a couple time, MI has their info hard-coded to the video.

Audio:

Noticed no problems.

Subtitle:

They're fine, it's just that there can be some mistiming, especially in episodes 3 and 4. They'll be too fast to read sometimes, and they'll be like a line behind.

Comment:

It's ripped from the MI release. I do not reccomend this show. It's a show about who knows what with Gainax doing things for the sake of doing things. Will someone please tell me what the hell this is about?

Perfect video throughout the entire series. (even with all 6 episodes are on one DVD-5)

Audio:

The audio itself was perfect, but there were times were it would drop out for less than a second. Only happened once per episode and didn't last long at all, it just happened at moments with music playing in the background so it was noticable.

Subtitle:

No spelling errors or wierd sentance structure. The only problems with the subs are occasional "parenthesis" where they didn't need to be and sometimes the subs would go too fast, still matching with what the characters were saying, but making it so you have to pause it just to read it.

Comment:

Extras:
- Promo clip with "Ride on Shooting Star" playing in the background.
- The Pillow's "Ride on Shooting Star" music video!
- Clean Closing animation

This has become one of my favorite series of all time. I just wish there was more of it. The music rocked, the plot has plenty of twists, and the ending wasn't dissapointing, it didn't leave you with an empty feeling like a lot of OVAs.

MI really needs to be thanked for this release, expecially since the R1's are being released with two episodes per disc...god I hate R1 anime companies!

Video is excellent, but has the typical MI flickering at the bottom of the screen. So don't sit too close to your TV.

Audio:

Perfect stereo.

Subtitle:

Subs are also excellent but sometimes very fast and sometimes a little bit off time, but never for long.

Comment:

Don't ask me what this series is about. And don't tell me that drugs weren't involved in the creation of this anime. You get robots coming out of a boy's head and a Vespa-riding space girl who fights them by hitting them with her left-handed Rickenbacker bass guitar. Strange! Recommended to everyone who likes fast and weird animes.

Excellent video, sourced off the R2s (obviously ;).

Audio:

No problems here, the audio track is great.

Subtitle:

The subtitles are extremely well translated (I would imagine that they used the ones on discs 2-6 of the R2 DVDs, unless they're idiots). There are some pretty major timing issues at several points however. Scenes like the one in the first episode which is done "manga style." They totally messed up the timing. I wouldn't say it's a big issue though, because it's fairly easy to tell what's going on. More of a minor annoyance. I give the subtitles a 3.5 because I find it really distracting, but it may be less of a problem for some...

Comment:

One of the most bizarre anime series you're likely to come upon. You could compare it to Excel Saga or Puni Puni Poemi, but FLCL just has a lot more class ;). This is the only HK DVD set out there right now, and the R1s aren't released yet (I believe the date is June 25 for the first volume).

Overall an excellent set. It includes three extras: A creditless version of the ending, a music video of "Ride on Shooting Star," and a trailer for the series (with no subtitles). The menu is animated and quite easy to navigate.

Great short series, 6 OVA episodes. This is by far the best short series released by Gainax. The video is perfect with no pixelation.

Audio:

Audio is perfect, no bugs, or humming. All audio is on.

Subtitle:

Subs are great. Sometimes they go by a little fast, but nothing big. Names are on with the Japanese ones. Two thumbs up ^_^
