Overall:
Video:
Pretty damn near perfect. The only issue was that when the show the map (which is about 3 times during the film) the names of the places are a little small and hard to read. You can sorta see what I mean in the screenshot I took but the pics even smaller so it isnt that bad. My guess is that due to compression lines are slightly softend but this is the only place its really noticable... The video is letterboxed and the film is from 1999 I think so the video is fresh and new.
Audio:
It sounded great and there was a cantonese dub aswell (although I havent listened to it). Music is also pretty heartwarming and the main song (sung in english) 'Carry a Dream' is quite tear jerking.
Subtitle:
Now im guessing these are ripped from R3 as is the rest of the dvd as there is no grammer or spelling issues. The only thing is I was a bit curious to the accuracy of the subs... I dont know all that much about how R3 subs are made but I have heard that they arn't allways perfect. I'll give you some examples: Marco says to the old man who finds him in the snow, "Arigato Ojiisan!" (thank you old man/grandpa) and its translated as "Thank you for saving my life". When he's first on the ship he says something about nearly being at Rio De Janero but the sub says something like "We will be there soon" (see the screenshot). Names are sometimes not written either so Marco says "Arigato Pablo" and we see "Thank you". He also shouts "Mother" in japanese but it gets translated to "Whats wrong". There was also a missing line when the train drivers say they will hurt his monkey he says what I guessed to be "Dont hurt Amadeo" but that was the only missing line... I guess the subs are just slightly simplified but they are still top notch and near perfect and I dont think they are HK originals as they are too good for that. There are also Chinese and simplified Chinese subtitles
Comment:
Well this film is one of the sadest films ive seen in ages and I welled up about five times and cried at the end. Im definatley checking out the tv series as this is what the film is based off. It reminded me of A Dog of Flanders as its the same heartwarming story and the animation and time period is similar. Buy this film NOW!
