Overall:
Video:
The video looked pretty good considering the anime was produced in 1992 so it's a bit outdated compared to Macross Plus or Zero but it was pretty good nonetheless. Most probably a DVD or at least an LD source. Theres a black shadow that moves up and down on the top of the screen (just like in the Love Hina MI set) but you will only notice it if you watch it on your computer. On my TV, I didn't notice it at all. Also, the colours were very dark and dull for the 3rd episode (the last episode on the 1st DVD). Most of that episode happens at night so that makes it worse, some scenes can be very difficult to see anything. You can really notice this during the mid-episode break animation, in the other episodes they are alot brighter with better colours. I posted some pics to show the difference between them.
Audio:
Fake HK 5.1 sound. You can really hear an echo in the audio track if you have a 5.1ch sound system but all you have to do is turn off your back speakers and all is good. Other than that, the audio track is pretty good, clear and well define. This is Macross so you know the music will be good.
Subtitle:
Excellent subtitles. The english was very good, no spelling mistakes, excellent grammar and sentence structure. Definately not HK originals One problem is that the letter j is completely missing so just is ust, journalist is ournalist and so on. The only time you see the letter J is when it is in capital like Jesus or in the hard coded subs for the alien languages. Also, sometimes words get stuck together like ourob, suppose to be our job but stuck together and no letter j. Another little thing is when words are spelled out in capitals, they often have a space in between them like THI S, these things don't happen to often and aren't very bothersome. HK email address appear once in a while, I would say an average of once an episode. I also notice 2-3 missed lines in both DVDs combined In the last episode Ingues's, the Marduk emperor, alien dialogue is not subbed but I think it was suppose to be that way. Because when Zentradi or Mardukian is spoken the subs were hardcoded on the video. Only during the last episode Ingues dialogue wasn't translated. Overall the subs were excellent
Comment:
Menus were animated but didn't have a chapter selection menu. One other problem was that the video and the audio wasn't from Macross II but from Macross Plus, you see Isamu and Guld and hear the song Voices but the menu said it was Macross II. Weird I think this was a rip of the MI version because both sets seem to have the same problems I also think that the series was ripped from a R1 source because the end credits were in english and listed the english voice actors, direction crew etc. for the english version. My set came in generic MAC packaging.
