great video no problems at all

Audio:

great audio .... did not really notice anything bad ...

Subtitle:

subtitles were not really good ... when someone talks at the same time as someone else... one of the subs are in black so you can't really see it well. other than that everything was fine

Comment:

overall it is a great movie... great story and great quality

Video is medium DVD quality. It's allright, but good be better IMO. The image seems a bit unsharp and it's missing a bit of contrast; I had to do some tweaking to get it to an acceptable level. Yes, I'm being picky here.

Audio:

Japanese audio track (2.0) This is probably the best part of this DVD. I don't have a good audio setup, so the very least I can say is that I noticed no problems whatsoever with the audio and that it sounded rather clear & crisp.

Subtitle:

English & Chinese subtitles. Now this is where the DVD lacks in potential. The subtitles are horrible... really. I don't mind the font ;which isn't that great either. Worst are the timings: sometimes they're ahead of the speaker, sometimes too late. Sometimes 4 or 5 sentences appear in less than 2 seconds. Other times someone is speaking for 5 seconds and there are no subtitles. You'll understand a lot, but you'll miss out a lot aswell. At its worst, there are sentences that belong to the next dialogue that are added to the current dialogue, which is VERY confusing. Clearly the one who timed this, is not the one who translated this. Translation isn't always accurate either. Also, sometimes there are sentences that are not being said, etc. You will however understand the main story if you pay attention and try not to get frustrated too much.

Comment:

Content-wise this is one of the greatest pieces of anime I have ever seen. It's a true piece of art. The only shame is that I had to watch it with horrible subtitles. I would recommend this title to anyone, just try to look for a better set. Personally I have high hopes on the new FX box, that will include all Kenshin OVA's + Movie. My advice is not to buy this, unless you understand Japanese fluently and don't need the subs; or if you can get this really cheap, like I did. Either buy the R1 (director's cut !) DVD if you can get it and have the money to spend on it, or try to get your hands on the FX OVA/Movie set that should be coming out soon (or any HK set that might exist that has better subtitles than this one). Anyhow, you have to watch this. It will certainly leave you touched and amazed of its beauty, wanting more...

Video: 5/5 Excellent, it seems to have a DVD source and picture is sharp and clear. It seems to be a little on the dark side (could be my TV setup) Sound: 4.5/5 2.0 Stereo, very good, in synch and clear. Nothing wrong with it. Subtitles: 3.5/5 OK english and grammar, nothing spectacular but for the most part engrish free. They are some spelling mistakes and typos but nothing too serious. The only problems with the subtitles is that they can go by too fast sometimes (keep the pause and rewind buttons handy) and the edges can be cut off the screen. This OVA set kicks ass! A prequel to the TV series. The art style is different than the TV series and it is more serious (Kenshin actually kills people in this set - lots of people). If you had seen the TV series the OVA set will add so much more to it. If you haven't seen it start by this OVA set.

Video/Audio: These are both rips from the ADV release of this series. It comes complete with the ADV closing credits. Subs: I'm not sure why but this disc has poor HK subs instead of the decent ADV ones. The translation and spelling are both pretty good but the timing is pretty bad... usually too fast to read and in a hard to read font. I'm glad that DVDs are easy to rewind so I could pick up the subs that I missed. Content: The visuals on this disc are amazing. The animators went out of their way to do some great shadow work and even experimented with a few scenes using video in the background (check my screen shots to see how well they work). This is an excellent prequel to the Rouruni Kenshin TV series. It does stand well on it's own but is easier to appreciate after you've seen the first season. With all four OVA episodes on the one disc, this is a great purchase for anyone interested in the history of Kenshin.

video and sound is excellent. the only problem was the subtitles. first, i did not like the font used. it was difficult for me to see clearly, and it was white. second, there are timing issues. long sentences get flashed only a split second before the next one. it did happen lots of times. and sometimes subtitles ran too long, making the first and last words unreadable. and lastly, the quality of the script is bad. i've watched better fansubs on vcd with better quality of subtitles.

Video: The video was great. Very clear. The back of the DVD case says its 16:9 but its really 4:3. Audio: 2 channel stereo. Subs: Some of the subs were too long and ran off the screen. Most of the time its okay but when the dialogue is long it can be a little difficult to follow. Overall they were decent but not as good as the fansub scripts that are available. The story itself is excellent though. If you've seen the series than you need to see this. It adds so much to Kenshin's character.
