Reviews for Argento Soma

Overall:

Video:

Video quality is top notch.

Audio:

Not too bad over all. There is a lot of action and explosions, so it's not terribly noticable

Subtitle:

Some parts just didn't translate just right. Overall though, I was average subtitling

Comment:

I really enjoyed this series. If gives you action, but at the same time allows you to watch the main charater develop and change. Ending was a little funky. It's not at all what you expect.

Very good. Nice and clear. There were a few out-of-sync glitches in the whole series, but overall nothing to worry about.

Audio:

No problems that I could detect.

Subtitle:

Very good. Rare problems of spelling, timing, and grammar. Subtitles go off the screen on 2 or 3 occasions. One episode's subtitles had the last letter of each sentence missing for the most part. Another episode's subtitles went by really fast. Also, episodes 22, 23, 24, and to a lesser degree, 25 and 26 were plaqued by subtitles mistiming and turbosubs throughout. Keep the remote control handy, folks. I believe the subtitles were taken from more than 1 source, although quality remains consistent. There were different spellings for names throughout the series, and even the opening and ending subs were different sometimes. Examples of different spellings: Jark/Sarg, Simmons/Symonds, Inez/Innes, Hartland/Heartland, TOD/Touto. All openings and closings subtitled. Episode 26 has a few lines of dialogue unsubbed on 2 occasions.

Comment:

- MI watermark appears once in a while, sometimes on the top left, sometimes on the top right - If you thought that e-mail addresses appearing in the subtitles were annoying, wait until you see this set! Website URL and 2 e-mail addresses are hardcoded! These appear once every 2 or 3 episodes. Subtitles toggling does not remove them. - E-mail address is everywhere on the inner gatefold artwork. These are very faint, can be mistaken for part of the artwork, and not noticeable unless you look closely. - All openings, closings and previews intact. - There were 9, 9, and 8 episodes on discs 1, 2 and 3 respectively, adding up to a total of 25 episodes plus 1 extra episode. - Menu is static with closing song playing in the background. Menu options are standard: Argento Soma, Subtitle, Chapter. - Chapter breaks at opening song, start of episode, closing song. - Great packaging! Clear plastic sleeve and gatefold with artwork. Discs art is not continuation of inner gatefold art, but still very nice! Content: Well... the story isn't that interesting at first and I don't like it all that much, although towards the end it gets a lot better. Ryu Soma, the show's protagonist, is so hell-bent on revenge that it gets annoying. Also, the animation is kind of average. It's been compared to Evangelion, and personally I like Evangelion more because of its emotional depth. But hey, that's just me.

The Video is great, obviously DVD Ripped. The only thing that annoys me is that sometimes appears those famous ... "M" logo and Email Adress Hardcoded ...so it won't get a 5 :)

Audio:

No problems

Subtitle:

Well, they are very good, very few spelling mistakes, good gramar, barely went off screen ... The timing is good also, except perhaps in episodes 22-24, when there are a couple of sequences when it's a little bit off, but it only lasts for a few moments and then gets right again.

Comment:

The Menus are in English. Includes also an Extra Episode ("Phase Extra"),a couple trailers of the serie, and textless Opening/Ending.All in all a Great Set. Note : I have the "AV" version of this set, it's just a rip of the MI set, even the MI logo and email adress appears . The only thing that is slighty different is the Gatefold (but it's almost equal) . When / If the AV version is added to this site i'll transfer this review to there, but it's just the MI version , they just ripped it :)

Really great video - absolutely DVD Quality - Great !!!

Audio:

Also no problems with the audio - sounds very good to me !!!

Subtitle:

Really good subs - grammatically perfect and the names of the charcters are correct. Sometimes there appear turbosubs and at the end of the show I noticed some misstimings. But overall the subs are very good.

Comment:

Argento Soma is really a great show, but a sad one, too. I really enjoyed watching the show. It's one of the series that gives you something to think about and I really love this kind of shows. So buy it !!!

Studio: Manga International Episodes: 1-25 Video: 5/5 Clean and crisp, DVD rip. Slight blurring, but nothing major. Audio: 5/5 Clear and crisp. Subtitles: 4.5/5 Fansub sourced, some typos here and there and slight mistiming but overall no problems at all. Chaptering: Prologue, OP, Part A, Part B, ED, Preview. Bonuses: None. Menus: Stills, in English: Play All, Subtitle, Chapters. BGM playing. Content: All of the show's there, as far as I can tell. I found the actual anime to be very boring and pretentious and gave up on it after episode 5. ^^; Impression: Excellent release for a bad show.

Argento Soma is a very interesting release. Decent music, okay character designs and a story that seems to be a retelling of Eva. But after the first 2 episodes you just have to love it! It's very intriguing. Video - 5/5 Perfect. Spotless. Audio - 4.5/5 Good, good. But it takes blowing my subwoofer out to get a 5 :o Subs - 5/5 Fansub script used very well. The last few eps have some tiny timing problems, but who cares. You're head won't explode for the 1 second delay in some places. Get this now. Do it for Mister X.

Video R2 DVD rip, 100%. It looks very good, with a little bit of grain in the heavy scenes. Audio Uhhh... sounds perfect to me. Subtitles Rip from Elite Fansubs version I guess. The're spot on, with a tiny bit of timing problems, but you'll barely notice it. There even are some extra's on the last DVD: - A few trailers - Clean OP/ED - (Special?) ED for Phase:Ex The set has very nice packaging, though they should've gotten rid of the email adresses on the back of the disc holders, it looks... weird. ;) RECOMMENDED SET! Great series too!

Video: Colors and details look great. My only prob is that sometimes I can see these translucent horizontal green bars across the screen...it's the same problem that's in the Kenshin Seisouhen DVD by MI. It's not too noticeable, and otherwise its perfect. 4.5/5 Audio: Sounds great. Show has interesting taste in music, by the way. 4.5/5 Subs: Looks like fansubs from different sources (names can be spelled differently). Only a minor problem timing with episodes 22-24 where turbo subs appear sometimes, and occasionally the subs are ahead or there's lag by a line or two for a scene. All songs are subbed. 4.5/5 Chapters: You get two per episode, plus one for the opening and one for the closing credits for each episode. The Phase: Extra episode (aka the Sue characterization episode) is also included after Phase 25. Read the subs and watch the End Credits of Phase:Extra for fun... Overall a great set for an interesting show.

This is the best quality DVD set I own, and the second best quality one I've ever seen (the best being El-Hazard). Video - The DVDs actually look DVD quality(*gasp!*). There are very few watermarks... one about every 2 or 3 eps. There are those occasional email addresses in the form of green text... not too bad as far as watermarks go. Subtitles - Fansubs... probably from Europe, seeing as though they spell color, "colour." VERY FEW spelling errors. Only one mistake, namewise (where takt is spelled the way it's spelled using japanese characters: Takuto) Audio - Great, no mistakes that i can see... but then again, I'm no audio buff. Most of the music is great, even though the ending song isn't too great... Content - My favorite show of the year! ^_^ Also to note: Each episode has its (Amazing! *_*) Intro, and (blah x.x) ending still intact, none of these "one intro, one ending per disc" deals here. Overall - While some might say that it's really similar to Evangelion(and it kind of is) this isn't a bad thing. The intro is one of the best i've ever seen. A very well made show, and a great HK DVD release. edited by TojiSuzuhara on 22 Jul 2002 3:07 am
