Video:

Wonderful high quality!

Audio:

Same as video! You can't see how old this movie really is.

Subtitle:

Very well done. In a few cases, the subs could be a little bit better, but that really doesn't matter.

Comment:

The Macross Movie is one of the classic Animes you should have seen! And the FX Versions is one of the best chances to do this.

The video quality was good overall.

The audio was fine.

Subtitle:

The subtitles were very understandable most of the time. There were a few times where they could have been better.

Comment:

This movie was great. I am pretty sure it is like a summary of the original Macross series, but I am not completely sure. Unfortunately I have never seen the original...

In anamorphic widescreen. The movie looks gorgeous, animation is top notch even by today's standards

Audio:

2.0 Dolby Digital. Excellent audio for something made 20 years ago.

Subtitle:

Not perfect but very understandable. A few sentences don't make sense sometimes but for the most part the subs are very good. Names are for the most correct but I did spot some chinese characters slip in the english subs.

Comment:

Extras were some trailers and ads, nothing much but nice to have.

No problems, perfect audio

Subtitle:

very good, but not as polished as the AS version I got(a rip of the MI) also except for the last 2 songs, the otheres are not subtitted and some chinese chaacters appear a few times, sloppy work

Comment:

beatifully done, this is the way Macross: DYRL should be seen, the movie version of Macross is one big piece of eye candy that will leave you wanting more, animation that still stands in the top even after 20 years, this is a movie that set up standards for what has come up ever since. you can't go wrong with this one

For an anime with almost 20 years, it looks absolutely wonderful.

Audio:

Standard audio 2 channel track. No problems noticed

Subtitle:

They are pretty understandable with reasonable english, and with few spelling errors and don't get out of screen, and they would probably get a 4.5 , if for the fact that the songs, with the exception of the last one, aren't subbed.

Extras : Just some trailers

The video quality was perfection in my eyes. I could barely believe how great it looked for such an old movie.

Audio:

Not a single thing wrong with the audio. It was great.

Subtitle:

Great subtitles, FX did a very good job on this one.

Comment:

I'm a huge Macross fan and I always loved the movie. This was a HUGE step up for me as I only had the VHS of this movie and the video quality was so much more enhanced in the DVD, I was very impressed as well as feeling nastalgic.

The remastered video for this 1984 release is beautiful. It was a welcomed replacement for my vhs fansub.

Audio:

I have a regular stereo tv, so I can't really critique the audio too much, but I have to say I had no problems with what I heard.

Subtitle:

Even though I have a fansub copy, I have not watched it in a while, but from what other people have said in earlier reviews, these subtitles are not as detailed as the ones used for the MI version. In my opinion, the subtitles were still great as they were perfectly understandable with very few misspellings and a chinese character replacing Roy's name. I thought the timing was well done also. Only the last two, but most important songs of the movie are subtitled. Comparing this with other HK releases, these subtitles are excellent.

Comment:

This is a dvd that anime fans of space drama, romance and idol music should definitely check out. It is at the top of its game in all of these categories. This dvd even has the concert footage from Macross Flashback 2012 that was cut out of the original version. It also contains numerous trailers for the movie. This was an excellent job from FX. This ranks up with my MI Berserk set. Do yourself a favor and buy this movie.

The video quality is excellent. Looks like it was remastered.

Audio:

Audio was excellent as well.

Subtitle:

There were a few things I found wrong with the subs. Some inconsistencies with the spelling of names, and some of the subs didn't have words that I heard them say, and in one scene when Hikaru says Roy, Roy is in Chinese characters. Other than that, no problems at all.

Comment:

This movie was really good. Sure it isn't as great as the series, but how many movies are? THis movie is still a little confusing even if you have already seen the original series. The very beginning just comes up in the middle of things, and you are tyring to figure out what is going on. I stil have to recommend this movie, and am sure it will get better with each viewing.

Macross: DYRL, was one of the most artistically accomplished animes of it's time, coming out in 1984. The tremendous video transfer that FX have done for this title (most probably from the Bandai Emotion R2 DVD release) dramtically underscores that fact. There is pratically no macroblocking, compression artifacts or colour bleeding. Everything from the Mikimoto drawn characters to the graceful, yet epic mecha combat sequences is brought to life with one of the most accomplished video transfers I have ever seen for a HK or R1 DVD disc. This is especially true when the age of the source material is coming on to nineteen years. Hats off to FX, they should be applauded as this is simply a fantastic looking release. Truly, this is DYRL as it should be seen.

Audio:

Even though this release lacks Dobly Digital 5.1 surround sound, the stereo audio track that is present is still wonderfully realised. Mecha and spacecraft whoosh with due aplomb and voices (especially during Minmei's heart warming songs) are crisp, clear and easy to make out. Although one of the least technically impressive aspects of this disc, FX have still managed to a pump out a good audio presentation for this disc.

Subtitle:

A heady mix of HK orginal subbing and numerous fansub scripts, DYRL's subs very occasionally (roughly about four or five times during the course of the whole movie), suffer from a few lines that don't make too much sense but are still understandable. At times also, the subs are timed incorrectly, but again these incidents are sporadic at best and are nowhere near frequent enough to hinder understanding thius wonderful film. On the whole though, the subs are largely very competent with most lines being easily understood and I had no problem whatsoever understanding the plot and character machinations of this feature. All in all, a very competent translation of a fantastic anime movie.

Comment:

This is easily the best version of Macross: DYRL that money can buy. Why? Well besides the reasons listed above this disc has extras too, such as the original ads for the DYRL movie as well as the teaser trailers also. In comparison to the shabby MI edition it's like comparing DVD to VHS in that the picture quality is so astounding that it mskes what is one of my most cherished anime features of all time a pleasure to watch. If you are like me and you've fallen in love with Macross or you just want to try an epic space opera the likes of which STILL hasn't been matched by the modern anime features of today, then you most certainly cannot go wrong with FX's Perfect Edition of Macross: DYRL. Highly recommended.

The way DYRL? was meant to be seen on DVD! This release is near perfect! Video - Excellent. Audio - Very well done. Subs - One or two spelling mistakes the entire movie. That's it. This video looks remastered too! A 5/5 for each category, not to mention 6/5 for story. Get it! You'll never see this movie any other way in the States.

Well, well, well! FX has done it again! This is EASILY one of the best HK dvds I own. Let's see..... Video-- (5/5) Man! The video on this disc is better than probably any other HK dvd! Very spectacular. Audio-- (4/5) Peh! The worst aspect. (and, it's still good!) The only reason I gave it a four oit of five is because it is slightly jerky. Subtitles-- (5/5) Flawless... Absolutley flawless. Content-- (5/5) Well, it isn't as good as the original series, but it is still very awesome! Overall, this is a wonderful dvd. I would suggest that you buy it for any price.

If your fan of either Macross or Robotech I would highly recommend this DVD. The video is among the best I've seen from a HK release. The animation itself is just awesome, and I can't believe it looks so good for such an older movie. The subtitles are near perfect, but sometimes get a wee bit engrishy. I also noticed a singular Chinesse character and some weird punctuation at times. Only the last two of Minmay's songs are subtitled too, but overall the subs are great. You never get confused to what may be going on. The audio sounded good through my stereo TV as well. There are also some extras in the form of theatrical trailers, and advertisements. As the DVD menu is in Japanesse (at least I assume it's Japanesse), I don't know exactly what these extras are. Another interesting thing to note is that there are no Chinesse subtitles on this release, just English. No big deal since I don't speak or read Chinesse, but I thought it was kinda weird. :) Overall, if you dig Macross pick this DVD up. The animation and action sequences are awesome.

The best video quality I have seen on an old anime. This was digitally remastered and it showed. The opening sequence that couldn't really be seen too clearly on other versions was perfectly clear. Also in widescreen if you set your dvd player correctly or else it'll be anamorphic (stretched). The audio is excelent. I didn't hear any feedback or humming in the rear speakers. It desn't have 5.1 but oh well...can't win em all. The subs I'd have to say are not as good as MI's...but they still are very good. They're yellow with black outline. The songs are not subbed like MI's. Some of the translations aren't as good either but still made perfect sense. MI was better in their choices of words used.

All I have to say first is WOW. Picture: The picture looks gorgeous on this transfer. At first I wasn't impressed with how it looked during the opening scene, but as the movie progressed I began to realize how amazing this looked. It's almost comparable to Pioneer's restoration of Akira (OK, not quite, but...). The colors are wonderfully vibrant, crisp, and clean, and artifacting is extraordinarily minimal (you need to look for it). I have the Anime Cartoon version as well, and the beautiful picture of this transfer blows it away. Aside from the style in which the characters were drawn, the picture is so good that the movie almost looks like a new release. (5+/5) Audio: I didn't hear anything imperfect with the audio, but I do only have a TV and not a surround sound setup, so... (5?/5) Subs: The subs aren't perfect, but they are very, very good. I like the font, and the subs are yellow outlined in black. Most of the songs aren't subbed, except for Minmei's big number during the finale and her song during the End Credits. Also, there are a few grammar errors, and I remember at least one time an English word (such as "Lieutenant Commander") came up as a Chinese character. Comparing the translation to the fansub script for the Anime Cartoon version, however, the Fx translation (devoid of Engrish) is not quite as sophisticated or detailed, so I would still put the subtitles on the older version as being a notch better. But at least these subtitles are devoid of e-mail addresses and the weird usage of quotation marks. (4/5) Literally, see Macross: Do You Remember Love? as it was meant to be seen.
